House cats have got life figured out. They have it downright made. All they have to do is look cute with their furry faces and their cute paws and I will do all kinds of things for them. My boyfriend’s cat, Bob, is certainly not an exception. He has it made. He meows, I fawn over him. He meows, he gets pets. He meows, he gets fed. He has the life. We could learn a lot from Bob and other cats. You may be asking what one could possibly learn from a lazy, furry thing like a house cat. A few things actually.

Take More Naps

Okay, so none of us can really afford to sleep as much as a cat. I read somewhere that cats sleep as much as 20 hours a day.  Lucky bastards, amiright?!?1

As human beings, we only need about 7-8 hours a night. But you know what else we need? A good old fashioned nap. According to the National Sleep Foundation, a short nap of 20-30 minutes can improve mood and help sharpen your mind. I can’t always take naps, but when I do, I cuddle with Bob and we dream of electric mice.

Be More Tolerant

Bob puts up with a lot. By a lot, I mean half-assed pets, light tail tugs, morning breath, clothes on the floor, stinky farts, and he doesn’t care if I worship God or sacrifice baby goats. While some behavior is just intolerable, (bigots, I’m looking at you) the majority of what sets us off can just as easily be ignored.

It’s not that Bob chooses his battles, but rather that he just doesn’t give a frak. As long as his basic needs are met, Bob is one happy camper.

Eat More Fish

Bob loves fish, and it is healthy for him, too. As a female vegetarian and runner, I admit that sometimes I don’t always get enough protein or iron. Enter Mariner’s Catch. That is Bob’s favorite. I am pretty sure it’s a mix of white fish. At any rate, fish is a healthy meat that provides important proteins and Omegas. So I took a cue from Bob and started to stock my cabinets with canned salmon and tuna. They both are versatile, taste delicious, and are very healthy.

Care Less About My Appearance

Bob often gets eye goops under each eye. He doesn’t care. He comes right up to me and begs for pets anyway. I took this as a cue. Not to completely stop caring, but to worry less about leaving the house without makeup on. Because I promise you, no one at Trader Joe’s thinks any less of me if I forgot to put on mascara before I went shopping.

He doesn’t know it, but Bob has made me look at the world in a slightly different light. I enjoy the little things and care less about what doesn’t matter, and what I can’t change. What life lessons can you learn from your cat?
